new book choices

I'll leave it to Lumpy to report on last week's meeting, as I had to coach a soccer match and thus arrived late (but early enough to take part in the speculation on why his girlfriend read A Sport and a Pastime). Here, however, are the book choices for next month: The Voyage, by Philip Caputo; The Nonexistent Knight, by Italo Calvino; Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer; and Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut. The poll is open for a week . . . feel free to add your comments here and lobby for your preferred choice. We'll set a meeting date shortly for sometime in May.

Great meeting GREAT MEETING!! Once again a great meeting! We met at the newly remodeled FOX AND HOUNDS which hasn't changed a bit.

Steve, Clark, John, Kyle, Lumpy, and Chip met to discuss Salter's A SPORT AND A PASTIME. The discussion centered around Salter's language...how he so effortlessly describes a time in France....HA! I'm lying. The discussion centered around the sex and what a genius Salter is for creating such vivid scenes involving sex. He broke new ground back in the day for his treatment of a young American man falling in love (and lust) with French hottie. The narrative isn't always clear and as usual, we NPSers have questions about who Dean really was. The narrator says none of the story is real, or parts of it are real. Contrast his warning with really real compressed description we haven't seen since Hemingway, and you get the feeling that Dean may not be Dean at all-but a blend of people real and imagined. No doubt it's a knockout book-the sexiest book since Lolita. Unlike many novels, the story doesn't move because of plotline, but because of the moving description of place and intimacy. All in all, it was a successful meeting with plenty of beer and great discussion about a great book.
